NORTH PACIFIC -- The Coast Guard has suspended its search for a crewman who fell overboard from a British-flagged ship headed to South Korea.

The search for Alexey Lyalyeaev ended shortly before 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

The 23-year-old Russian crewman was last seen Saturday morning on the container ship Hyundai Tokyo, which was in the North Pacific Ocean about 180 miles south of Unimak Island. Lyalyeaev's roommate reported him missing.

The 996-foot container ship was sailing from Oakland, Calif., to the southern Korean port city of Busan, formerly known as Pusan.

The Coast Guard said the weather in the search area was initially calm and the water temperature was in the 40s. It says winds increased and seas built to 10 feet.
